Hello IASPM-Canada,
I’m Michael Ethen, IASPM blogger and Ph.D. candidate in historical musicology at McGill University, where I am researching the genesis of arena rock social space in North America. I also identify as an American, left-handed, mostly vegetarian, thirty-something male, etc.
First, thanks to Paul Aitken for kick-starting the IASPM-Canada website and inviting Jeremy, Marlie, and me to contribute. Ideally, this blog will foment broad discussions about popular musics, and relevant communication across the IASPM. So we’re counting on your feedback, to continue building a better and more useful website.
Shall we begin with the job market? As a graduate student, I frequently find myself discussing the topic with colleagues. In 2010 the prospects are grim for landing a tenure-track job in the humanities, but it does happen on occasion and I’d rather not dwell on the negative anyway. Instead, I’d like to invite a discussion of the wide range of employment during and after graduate school, not only the existing avenues but also the unexplored possibilities. Because the IASPM is by definition multi-disciplinary, we can expect to hear diverse vantage points on this issue.
